About the zine

Jojo's Retro adventures is an SFW for-profit zine exploring the links between JJBA and retro videogames.
("Retro" takes up to the PS 2 / Wii / Xbox generation here.)
We're aiming to do a physical zine, with up to ~30 contributors. Keep in touch if you want to participate!

Actuality: leftover sales

Heads up, the leftover sales are finally here!
We are happy to announce the re-opening of our BigCartel store for this last sales batch. We recommend checking it out if you're interested (by clicking on the image below)!

Our team!

Moderators, artists, and writers: these are the three playable classes in our zine! All of them will give their best, and it's important to know who they are!

Moderators

Here is the wonderful team with who you'll be able to work if you join the project; we can't wait to see your applications and see how this zine will end up!

Frequently Asked Questions

About contributions

Do you take writers?

Yes we do! We'll take 3 writers.

Can artists contribute with comics?

Yes, they can! It’ll bring variety and dynamism to the zine, it can really be a great idea. We'll limit the comics contributions to 3 though.

How important is it to be able to draw backgrounds?

It isn’t that important. To be honest, we probably will prefer portfolios with detailed backgrounds, but the style matters a lot too, and we’ll simply ask you to not fill your background with only one colour. It can be a bg with a pattern or some cool abstract drawings and shapes linked with the theme, but please don’t leave us with a blank background!

About the content

Will all JoJo parts be considered for this zine?

Yes, and we’ll try to balance the amount of artwork for each part.

What games are considered retro?

A console is considered retro when outdated by two generations. We will therefore keep the zine’s limit to PlayStation 2 / Xbox / Game Cube’s generation. About PC games, it is more complicated to draw a limit, so we’ve decided to put it around Windows 7 / Vista. (~2006)
Anything younger isn’t retro.
In any case, the contributors will be free to ask us about their retro games, and we’ll say if it counts or not. The goal mainly is to have fun and turn the spotlight on old games of our childhood, that could be forgotten.

Will you create merch?

Yes, we will! We will be looking for 3 merch artists.

Are ships allowed in this zine?

Yes. Nonetheless, this zine isn’t about shipping, so please don’t make your pieces all about a couple or what. Keep it subtle and, of course, SFW for everyone to enjoy it.

About "problematic" ships:

We are not here to judge our contributors and buyers about ships, and even less to decide whether a ship is problematic or not. We won’t decline an application based on the contributor’s ships, and won’t either forbid the appearance of some ships called problematic (once again if it’s only slightly suggested and not the center of the piece), pedophile ships excluded (those involving Anne or Shizuka, as an example).

Information for contributors

You want to join the team but aren't sure about some points?
Here is all the information you could need to know before applying!

Number of contributors

- Artists: 20 (we'll allow 3 of them to contribute with a comic)
- Merch artists: to be defined
- Writers: 3

Schedule

- January 20th: End of the contributor apps
- January 31th: Mails sent to the applicants
- March 1st: Sketch completed - writers have a summary and around 300 words written
- April 1st: Line completed with colour keys / Flats completed if lineless - first full draft for writers
- May 1st: Final pieces

Remuneration

We got asked about remuneration, and agree on the importance of being transparent about finance, as a for-profit zine. For us, it is essential to pay everyone fairly for the work provided.
That's why we aim to share the benefits equally between all of the 30 contributors; those who work more will have a proportionally higher income. (As an example: spread artists or mods.)
However, we will give away the gains to charity if the benefits are too few. We think it's best to give away to charity if we can't pay our contributors appropriately. We didn't decide the charity to who we'll give away the money yet. It will most likely be discussed with all the contributors if we ever reach this point.

Theme suggestions

The "retro" label is a bit blurry, and some of you might feel a bit lost about what you'll be able to evoke or not. Here is a list of possible subjects and licenses to give you some ideas!- JJBA games (Heritage for the Future (98), Vento Aureo (2002))
- 2000's games (Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, GTA...)
- 90's games (Zelda, Pokémon, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Kirby, Tekken...)
- 80's games (Street Fighter, Tetris, Prince of Persia, Pitfall, Phantasy Star...)
- Arcade / Arcade games and earlier games like Tennis for Two, Pong or Space Invaders
- Old devices like 56k modems / old computers / retro consoles without being specifically about a game!
You may want to draw crossovers, but please don't draw them explicitly.
As an example: no Mario hanging out with Will Zeppeli; you can, however, draw Will dressed as Mario.
